How to Get a McLean County Marriage License

The form asks for your full names, dates and places of birth, current addresses, Social Security numbers, occupations, and parents' names. You can call (309) 888-5897 to check hours or ask the staff any questions. Walk-ins are usually accepted, but a quick call can save you time. The clerk's office also has a license instructions page that breaks down exactly what documents you need for your McLean County marriage license.

McLean County Marriage License Requirements
Both people must be at least 18. A 16 or 17 year old needs written consent from both parents or legal guardians. No one under 16 can apply. You each need a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID all work. The IDPH valid ID page shows all accepted forms.
No blood test is required. Illinois stopped asking for blood tests in 1989. There is no residency rule either. Students at Illinois State University or Illinois Wesleyan University who come from out of state can apply for a McLean County marriage license just like longtime residents. The same goes for visitors from any other state or country.
If either person was married before, the clerk needs to know the date, county, and state where that marriage ended. A recent divorce (within the last six months) requires a certified copy of the decree. Under 750 ILCS 5/212, you cannot get a marriage license if a prior marriage or civil union has not been dissolved. Close blood relatives cannot marry, and first cousins can marry only if both are over 50.
Marriage License Waiting Period in McLean County
Illinois has a one-day waiting period for all marriage licenses. Under 750 ILCS 5/207, your McLean County marriage license takes effect the calendar day after the clerk issues it. You cannot hold your ceremony on the same day you pick up the license. Get it at least two days before the wedding.
The license is good for 60 days from its effective date. If that window passes without a ceremony, the license expires. You have to go back to the McLean County Clerk, fill out a new form, and pay again. The license is also valid only in McLean County. A license from here cannot be used in Tazewell County, Woodford County, or anywhere else. Confirm that your venue is actually inside McLean County borders before you apply.
Note: A court can waive the one-day wait in special circumstances, but this is rare in McLean County.
McLean County Marriage License Fees
Each Illinois county sets its own marriage license fee. There is no statewide standard. Fees range from $30 to $90 across the state. Call (309) 888-5897 to find out what McLean County charges right now. Ask about accepted payment methods at the same time. Some counties take only cash. Others accept checks and cards.
Certified copies of the marriage certificate have their own separate fee. You will need certified copies for name changes, updating insurance, and other official purposes. Who Can Perform a Marriage in McLean County
Under 750 ILCS 5/209, a judge, retired judge, mayor, village president, or religious leader can officiate a wedding in McLean County. No witnesses are required under Illinois law. The Bloomington-Normal area has a wide range of churches, venues, and independent officiants available for couples getting married here.
After the ceremony, the officiant must complete the marriage certificate and send it back to the McLean County Clerk within 10 days. This deadline is set by state law and applies everywhere in Illinois. If the form comes back late or not at all, it delays the recording of your marriage. That means you cannot get certified copies until the paperwork is filed. Tell your officiant about this rule well before the wedding day.
Certified Copies of McLean County Marriage Records
Once the marriage is recorded, certified copies are available from the McLean County Clerk in Bloomington. The county is the only source for the full certified copy. The IDPH marriage records page confirms that the state does not issue certified copies. IDPH can verify basic marriage facts for events from 1962 onward, but that verification is limited to names, dates of birth, the event date, and the county.
A state verification costs $5. To request one, mail the verification form to the IDPH Division of Vital Records in Springfield with a check or money order and a readable photo ID. For most practical purposes, you want the certified copy from the McLean County Clerk instead. It is the document banks, insurance companies, and government offices will ask for.
Under the Vital Records Act (410 ILCS 535), marriage records are not public in Illinois. Only the people named on the record, their legal representatives, and certain other authorized parties can get copies. The McLean County Clerk follows these rules for all certified copy requests.
