Schaumburg Marriage License Records
Schaumburg marriage license applications are filed through the Cook County Clerk's office. Schaumburg is one of the largest suburbs in the northwest part of Cook County, sitting between Hoffman Estates and Palatine along the I-90 corridor. Couples who live here apply for their marriage license at any of the six Cook County Clerk branches. The Rolling Meadows office is the closest one for most Schaumburg residents. Both partners must appear together with valid identification and pay the $60 fee. This page explains the full process for Schaumburg couples, including where to go, what to bring, how the ceremony works, and how to get certified copies after the wedding.
Schaumburg Marriage License Quick Facts
Schaumburg Marriage License Through Cook County
Schaumburg is part of Cook County, so the Cook County Clerk issues all marriage licenses here. County Clerk Monica Gordon manages the office, which has six locations spread across the county. The main office sits at 50 W. Washington St. in downtown Chicago. Branch offices are in Markham, Skokie, Rolling Meadows, Maywood, and Bridgeview.
For Schaumburg residents, the Rolling Meadows branch is the best option. It is just east of Schaumburg along Algonquin Road and generally has shorter lines than the downtown office. You walk in, fill out the forms, pay the fee, and walk out with your license the same day. The whole thing usually takes under an hour, though busy periods like June and December can push that higher.
Check the Cook County Clerk marriage license page for current hours before you drive over. Holiday closures and schedule changes do happen. The phone number for questions is (312) 603-0996.
What Schaumburg Couples Need to Bring
Both people must appear in person. You cannot have someone else apply on your behalf, and you cannot do it by mail. Each person needs a valid government photo ID. A driver's license or state ID works. So does a passport or military ID. The IDPH valid ID page has the complete list of what the clerk will accept. You also bring your Social Security number, date of birth, birthplace, and your parents' full names including maiden names.
Both people must be 18 or older under 750 ILCS 5/203. There is no residency rule. You don't have to live in Schaumburg, Cook County, or even Illinois. If you were married before, and that marriage ended less than six months ago, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate. If it ended longer ago than that, you just need to know the date and location.
No blood test. Illinois ended that requirement in 1989. Under 750 ILCS 5/212, close blood relatives are not allowed to marry each other in this state.
Marriage License Fee in Schaumburg
The fee is $60. That is the Cook County rate, and it is the same at all six locations. The clerk takes cash, checks, and credit cards. A small card processing surcharge may apply at some branches. If you want to avoid the extra charge, bring cash. You pay the fee at the time of application, and the license is printed right there.
Under 750 ILCS 5/207, the license becomes valid the day after it is issued. Get it on a Saturday, use it starting Sunday. It stays valid for 60 days. If the ceremony does not happen within those 60 days, the license expires. Schaumburg couples need to time it right so they do not have to reapply and pay the $60 fee again.
Certified copies of the completed marriage certificate are a separate purchase. Contact the Cook County Clerk for current copy prices.
Schaumburg Marriage Ceremony Options
Here is something most people don't know. Cook County is the only county in all of Illinois where the county clerk can perform a marriage ceremony. That comes from 750 ILCS 5/209, which says the clerk can solemnize marriages in counties with over 2,000,000 residents. Cook County is the only one. Schaumburg couples can get the license and have the ceremony right at the Rolling Meadows branch if they want. One trip, done.
Judges, retired judges, religious leaders, and the mayor of Chicago can officiate too. Illinois does not require any witnesses at the ceremony, which works well for couples who want something small and private. After the ceremony, the officiant has 10 days to complete the marriage certificate and return it to the Cook County Clerk. Late filings cause delays with certified copies, so make sure your officiant is aware of the deadline.
The Cook County marriage license covers ceremonies held within Cook County only. Schaumburg is inside Cook County, so local venues, hotels, restaurants, and parks all work. But if you book a venue in DuPage County, which borders Schaumburg on the west and south sides, you need a DuPage County license instead. That is a common mistake for Schaumburg couples because the DuPage border is right there. Double check your venue address before applying.
Note: Schaumburg straddles the Cook and DuPage County line in some areas, so confirm which county your venue is in before you apply.
Marriage Equality in Schaumburg
Cook County led the way in Illinois on marriage equality. Same-sex marriage licenses became available on February 21, 2014, months before the statewide start of June 1, 2014. A federal court order allowed Cook County to begin early. Today the process is the same for every couple in Schaumburg. Same forms. Same $60 fee. Same ID rules. The Cook County Clerk marriage license page confirms equal treatment for all applicants.
Certified Copies of Schaumburg Marriage Licenses
Once the officiant returns the completed certificate, the Cook County Clerk puts it on record. You can then order certified copies. Visit any of the six Cook County offices or send a mail request. Certified copies are the legal proof of your marriage. You need them for changing your name at the Social Security Administration, updating your driver's license, switching insurance beneficiaries, and other official tasks that follow the wedding.
The IDPH marriage records page makes it clear that the state does not hand out certified copies. IDPH only issues verification letters for marriages on file from 1962 forward. That costs $5 and confirms basic facts like names, the date, and the county. For the full certified copy of a Schaumburg marriage license, the Cook County Clerk is the only source. The Vital Records Act (410 ILCS 535) governs how these records are stored and who has the right to request copies.
Note: Illinois vital records are not public under the Freedom of Information Act.
Illinois Marriage License Resources
The Illinois Association of County Clerks and Recorders has a directory of every county clerk in the state. Since Schaumburg is right on the Cook and DuPage border, this directory is especially useful. You can look up the DuPage County Clerk's office if your venue turns out to be on that side of the line.
Use the directory to check hours, addresses, and contact numbers for any of the 102 county clerk offices in Illinois.
The IDPH website has more details about what marriage records the state keeps on file and how they differ from what the county clerk holds. For Schaumburg couples, the bottom line is that your marriage license and all certified copies come from the Cook County Clerk, not the state.
This IDPH page explains how to get a verification letter and what information it contains.
