Cook County Clerk Handles Palatine Licenses

Palatine is in Cook County. County Clerk Monica Gordon runs the office that issues marriage licenses for the entire county. There are six locations to choose from. For Palatine couples, the Rolling Meadows branch is the obvious pick. It is the nearest office, and wait times are usually shorter than what you would find at the main downtown Chicago location at 50 W. Washington St.

Every branch handles the same application. Same forms. Same fee. Same rules. The only difference is the address. Some Palatine residents prefer the Skokie branch if they happen to be heading that direction, but Rolling Meadows is generally the fastest option. Call (312) 603-0996 if you want to check hours or ask the clerk a question before your visit.

The Cook County Clerk marriage license page lists all six branch offices with their addresses and hours. It is worth a quick check before heading out, especially around holidays when schedules may change.

The Village of Palatine website provides information about local services in the village. While the village itself does not issue marriage licenses, the site can be useful for finding local venues and other resources for Palatine couples.

Palatine Marriage License Requirements

Both people must come in together. You cannot send one person or use a representative. Bring a valid government photo ID. Accepted forms include a driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. The IDPH valid ID page has the full list. You also need your Social Security number, date and place of birth, and both parents' full names including maiden names.

Under 750 ILCS 5/203, both parties must be at least 18 years old. No residency requirement exists. You don't need to live in Palatine, Cook County, or Illinois. Anyone who is legally eligible can apply here. If either person was previously married and that marriage ended within the last six months, bring proof that it is over. A certified divorce decree or death certificate will work. If the prior marriage ended more than six months ago, you only need to know when and where.

No blood test is needed. Illinois dropped that rule in 1989. Under 750 ILCS 5/212, close blood relatives cannot marry. First cousins may only marry if both are over 50.

Palatine Marriage License Cost

A marriage license in Cook County costs $60. That is the fee at all six offices, including Rolling Meadows. The clerk takes cash, checks, and credit cards. Card payments may come with a small processing fee at certain branches. Cash keeps it at exactly $60. The license is printed and given to you on the same visit.

Under 750 ILCS 5/207, the license does not take effect until the next calendar day. Pick it up on Tuesday, use it starting Wednesday. The license is good for 60 days. After that, it expires and you must apply and pay again. Palatine couples should plan the ceremony within that 60-day window so the license does not go to waste.

Note: Certified copies of the completed marriage certificate cost extra and are ordered separately from the Cook County Clerk.

Ceremony Rules in Palatine

Cook County is the only county in Illinois where the county clerk can officiate weddings. Under 750 ILCS 5/209, this applies only to counties with a population above 2,000,000. Cook County is the only one that qualifies. Palatine couples can have the clerk perform the ceremony right at the Rolling Meadows branch or any other office.

Judges, retired judges, religious leaders, and the mayor of Chicago can also officiate. Illinois does not require witnesses at the ceremony. After the wedding, the officiant must complete the marriage certificate and return it to the Cook County Clerk within 10 days. If the certificate comes back late, it causes delays when you need certified copies later on.

Keep your ceremony within Cook County lines. Your Cook County marriage license is only valid for ceremonies held inside the county. Palatine is well within Cook County, so any local venue works. But if you choose a spot in Kane County or Lake County, you would need to get the license from that county instead. Many Palatine couples use local banquet halls, parks, or churches right in the village for their ceremonies.

Getting Palatine Marriage License Copies

After the officiant sends the completed certificate back, the Cook County Clerk records the marriage. You can then request certified copies from any of the six offices or by mail. These certified copies serve as your legal proof of marriage. You need them for name changes, updating insurance, changing bank accounts, and handling other official matters.

The IDPH marriage records page says the state does not issue certified copies. IDPH only provides verification letters for marriages from 1962 onward. A verification costs $5 and confirms names, dates, and the county. For the actual certified copy, the Cook County Clerk is the only place to get it. The Vital Records Act (410 ILCS 535) sets the rules for how these records are maintained and who can access them.
