How to Get a Knox County Marriage License

Walk into the Knox County Clerk's office at the courthouse in Galesburg. Both of you need to be there. Bring a valid photo ID like a driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport, or military ID. The IDPH valid ID page shows the full list of what counts. You also need your Social Security number, date of birth, and place of birth. The clerk will ask for your parents' full names. That includes your mother's maiden name.

Under 750 ILCS 5/203, the county clerk issues the license once both people sign the form and pay the fee. You fill out the form, show your IDs, pay, and the clerk hands you the license. It does not take effect right away. The one-day wait means you can use it starting the next calendar day. Plan your trip to the Knox County Clerk at least two days before your wedding date so the timing works out.

No blood test is needed. Illinois got rid of that rule back in 1989. There is also no residency rule, so you do not have to live in Knox County or even in Illinois to apply for a marriage license here. Anyone can walk in and apply as long as both people are present and have proper ID.

Knox County Marriage License Requirements

Both people must be 18 or older. Under 750 ILCS 5/208, a person who is 16 or 17 can get a marriage license with consent from both parents. Nobody under 16 can apply in Illinois. The Knox County Clerk checks ages and IDs at the time of the visit. You cannot apply online or by phone. Both people must be present in the office at the same time to sign the form.

If you were married before, the clerk needs details. You must give the date, county, and state where that marriage ended. Was it a divorce or a death? If it ended within the last six months, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate. The clerk will not process your Knox County marriage license without that document. This catches some people off guard, so check your records before you go.

The IDPH marriage records page explains that certified copies of marriage records come from the county clerk, not from the state. The screenshot below shows the state's marriage records information.

Knox County License Waiting Period

Illinois has a one-day wait. Under 750 ILCS 5/207, the marriage license takes effect the calendar day after it is issued. You cannot use it on the same day you pick it up from the Knox County Clerk. A court can waive this in rare cases, but most couples should plan ahead. Get your license at least one full day before the ceremony.

The license stays valid for 60 days from its effective date. After that it expires. You would have to go back to the Knox County Clerk, fill out a new form, and pay the fee again. And the license only works in Knox County. If your wedding venue is in Peoria County or Henry County, you need a license from that county instead. Double check where your ceremony will take place before you apply. This is one of the most common mistakes couples make.

After Your Knox County Marriage Ceremony

The person who performs the wedding must fill out the marriage certificate and return it to the Knox County Clerk within 10 days. Under 750 ILCS 5/209, this deadline applies to all marriages in Illinois. A late return can cause delays when you need certified copies later. Judges, retired judges, religious leaders, and mayors can all officiate a wedding in Knox County. No witnesses are required by state law.
