Getting a Marriage License in Jersey County

Visit the Jersey County Clerk's office in Jerseyville. Call (618) 498-5571 to check hours before you go. Clerk Pam Warford handles all marriage license applications. Both people must come in at the same time. One person cannot apply on behalf of the other. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport, or military ID will all work. Check the IDPH valid ID page for the full list.

You will need your social security number, date of birth, place of birth, and current address. The clerk asks for both parents' full legal names too. Under 750 ILCS 5/203, both applicants must be at least 18. The Jersey County Clerk issues the license after both people sign the application and pay the fee. Illinois does not need a blood test. There is no residency rule either. Couples from Missouri, from other parts of Illinois, or from anywhere else can walk into the Jerseyville office and apply. You don't have to prove you live in the county or state.

Note: The Jerseyville office may have limited hours on certain days, so calling ahead at (618) 498-5571 is a good idea.

Jersey County Marriage License Timing

Illinois has a one-day waiting period. Under 750 ILCS 5/207, the license takes effect the calendar day after it is issued. You cannot use it on the same day you apply. So if you go to the Jerseyville office on a Monday, the earliest your ceremony can happen is Tuesday.

The license stays good for 60 days from the date it takes effect. After 60 days, it expires. If that happens, you have to go back and apply all over again with a new fee. Keep in mind the license only works inside Jersey County. A license from Jerseyville cannot be used at a venue in Greene County, Madison County, or anywhere outside Jersey County borders. Western Illinois has plenty of scenic spots near county lines, so double-check with your venue about which county they sit in before you apply. It is a common mistake that costs people time and money when they file in the wrong county.

The Jerseyville office will not issue a new marriage license without it when that six-month window applies.
