DuPage County Clerk in Wheaton
The DuPage County Clerk is located at 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL 60187. Since Wheaton is the county seat, you get the advantage of having the clerk right in your city. No long drive needed. County Clerk Elizabeth Chaplin runs the office. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is (630) 407-5411. Walk-ins are fine. You do not need to make an appointment, but some couples prefer to call ahead and make sure the office is not swamped.
The DuPage County Clerk licenses page has the online pre-application form. Fill it out at home the night before your visit. You enter basic personal details for both parties. Then when you show up, the clerk already has your info in the system. It cuts down on time at the counter. Both people still must appear in person together. The clerk needs to see you both, check IDs, and get signatures. But the data entry part is done already.
Wheaton Marriage License Fees
The fee is $35 for a marriage license at the DuPage County Clerk. That is the same no matter where in DuPage County your ceremony will be held. The clerk takes cash, checks, and credit cards. If you pay by card, there is a $1 processing fee on top. So card users pay $36 total. Bring cash or a check if you want to stay at exactly $35.
The license is printed and handed to you on the spot. Under 750 ILCS 5/207, it takes effect the next calendar day. So if you pick it up on a Wednesday, your ceremony can happen on Thursday at the earliest. The license stays valid for 60 days. If you do not use it within that window, it expires and you have to apply again with a new $35 fee. Most Wheaton couples pick it up a week or two before the wedding.
Note: DuPage County charges $35 regardless of residency, so out-of-state couples pay the same fee.
Wheaton Marriage License Requirements
Both people must be at least 18 years old. There is no residency requirement in Illinois. You do not need to live in Wheaton or DuPage County. Anyone from any state or country can apply here, as long as the ceremony will be held within DuPage County. Under 750 ILCS 5/203, the clerk issues the license once both parties show up, sign the form, and pay.
Bring a valid government photo ID. The clerk accepts a driver's license, state ID, passport, military ID, or foreign passport. The IDPH valid ID page lists all accepted forms. You also need your Social Security number, date and place of birth, and your parents' full names including maiden names. If a previous marriage ended in the last six months, bring the certified divorce decree or death certificate. If it ended longer ago, you just need the date and location.
No blood test is required. Illinois has not had that rule since 1989. Close blood relatives cannot marry under 750 ILCS 5/212. First cousins can only marry if both are over 50.
Wheaton Wedding Ceremonies
Under 750 ILCS 5/209, a judge, retired judge, or religious leader can officiate the wedding. The DuPage County Clerk cannot perform ceremonies. That perk is only available in Cook County, which is the only county in Illinois with more than 2 million residents. Wheaton couples need to arrange their own officiant.
Illinois does not require witnesses at the ceremony. After the wedding, the officiant must fill out the marriage certificate and return it to the DuPage County Clerk within 10 days. That deadline matters. If the paperwork comes in late, it can delay your ability to get certified copies. Make sure your officiant knows the 10-day window and takes it seriously.
