Skokie Has a Clerk Branch Office

Skokie is one of only six locations in Cook County where you can get a marriage license. The Cook County Clerk's Skokie branch office is right here in the village. This is a huge convenience that most suburbs do not have. You do not need to fight traffic into downtown Chicago or drive to a distant branch. The Skokie office handles the exact same marriage license process as the main office at 50 W. Washington St., Chicago, IL 60602. Same forms. Same fee. Same rules.

County Clerk Monica Gordon oversees all six locations. The other branches are in Markham, Rolling Meadows, Maywood, and Bridgeview. But for Skokie residents and anyone in the north suburban area, the local branch is the clear winner. Check the Cook County Clerk marriage license page for the Skokie branch address and current hours before your visit. Hours can change around holidays. Call (312) 603-0996 if you need to confirm anything by phone.

Note: The Skokie branch also serves residents from nearby Evanston, Des Plaines, and other north shore communities.

Skokie Marriage License Requirements

Both people must come in together. The clerk will not process an application from just one person. Each applicant needs a valid government photo ID such as a driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. The IDPH valid ID page shows all accepted forms. You also need your Social Security number, your date and place of birth, and both parents' full names including maiden names.

Under 750 ILCS 5/203, there is no residency requirement. Anyone can apply at the Skokie branch regardless of where they live. Both people must be 18 or older. No blood test is required. If either person was married before and the prior marriage ended within the last six months, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate. For older endings, the date and location are all you need.

Under 750 ILCS 5/212, close blood relatives cannot marry in Illinois. First cousins may only marry if both are over 50 years old.

Skokie Marriage License Fee

The fee is $60. This is the Cook County rate at all six offices. You pay when you apply. Cash, checks, and credit cards are accepted. A small card surcharge may apply at some locations, so bring cash if you want to keep it at exactly $60. The clerk prints the license on the spot and hands it to you.

There is a one-day waiting period. Under 750 ILCS 5/207, the license becomes valid the next calendar day after issue. Pick it up on Saturday, use it starting Sunday. The license is good for 60 days. If you do not hold your ceremony within that window, the license expires. You would have to go back to the Skokie branch (or any other office), reapply, and pay $60 again.

Skokie Village Resources

The Village of Skokie website provides community information, local government services, and resources for residents planning events and ceremonies.

Village of Skokie website for marriage license information

While the village does not issue marriage licenses (that is the county clerk's job), the Skokie website can help you find local parks, event venues, and community services. Having the Cook County Clerk branch right in Skokie makes this village one of the most convenient places in the suburbs to handle your marriage license paperwork.

Wedding Ceremony Rules in Skokie

Judges, retired judges, and religious leaders can officiate weddings in Illinois under 750 ILCS 5/209. Cook County has an extra option that makes Skokie even more convenient. Because Cook County has over 2,000,000 people, the county clerk can also perform marriage ceremonies. You could walk into the Skokie branch, apply for your license, and then come back the next day for the ceremony, all in the same building. No other county in Illinois offers clerk-performed ceremonies.

After the ceremony, the officiant must complete the marriage certificate and return it to the Cook County Clerk within 10 days. Do not let this slip. Late filings cause delays when you try to get certified copies later. Illinois does not require witnesses at the ceremony.

Getting Skokie Marriage Copies

Once the officiant returns the completed certificate, the Cook County Clerk records it. You can request certified copies at the Skokie branch or any of the five other clerk locations. Certified copies serve as your legal proof of marriage. You will need them for name changes, insurance updates, bank account changes, and more. Having the branch right in Skokie means you do not have to travel far for this either.

The IDPH marriage records page makes clear that the state does not issue certified copies. The Illinois Department of Public Health can only verify basic marriage facts from 1962 onward for a $5 fee. For the certified copy of a Skokie marriage license, the Cook County Clerk is where you go. The Vital Records Act (410 ILCS 535) governs record storage and access. Marriage records in Illinois are not considered public under FOIA.

Note: Order multiple certified copies at once to save trips back to the clerk's office.

Marriage Equality in Skokie

Cook County began issuing same-sex marriage licenses on February 21, 2014, months ahead of the June 1, 2014 statewide date. A federal court order allowed Cook County to move first. The Skokie branch has been issuing licenses to all couples since that date. Today the process is identical for everyone. Same $60 fee. Same forms. Same ID rules. Same branches.

Illinois Marriage License Directory

The Illinois Association of County Clerks and Recorders maintains a directory of all 102 county clerk offices. Skokie is in Cook County, but if your ceremony venue is in Lake County or another neighboring county, you need to get your license from that county's clerk. A Cook County marriage license is only valid for ceremonies held inside Cook County lines.
