Cook County Clerk for Oak Lawn

Oak Lawn is part of Cook County, so marriage licenses come from Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon's office. The clerk runs six locations across the county, and the Bridgeview branch is the best choice for Oak Lawn residents. It sits just minutes away in the southwest suburbs and handles the full marriage license process. You walk in, apply, pay, and leave with your license the same day. The main downtown office at 50 W. Washington St., Chicago, IL 60602 also works if you happen to be in the city. Call (312) 603-0996 with any questions.

The Cook County Clerk marriage license page lists all six branch addresses and their hours. The Bridgeview location tends to be less crowded than the downtown office. Oak Lawn couples can often get through the whole process in under an hour there. Check the website before your visit for any holiday closures or schedule changes.

Note: All six Cook County Clerk locations charge the same fee and follow the same rules.

Oak Lawn Marriage License Requirements

Both people must appear together. No one can apply alone. Each person brings a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver's license works. So does a state ID, passport, or military ID. The IDPH valid ID page has the full list of what counts. You also need your Social Security number, date and place of birth, and both parents' full names. Maiden names are part of the form too.

There is no residency rule under 750 ILCS 5/203. You do not need to live in Oak Lawn or even in Illinois to get a license here. Both parties must be at least 18. No blood test is needed. Illinois ended that requirement decades ago. If either person was previously married, you need details about how it ended. Bring a certified divorce decree or death certificate if the prior marriage ended within the last six months. For older endings, just know the date and the county or state where it happened.

Under 750 ILCS 5/212, close relatives cannot marry. First cousins can only marry if both are over 50 years old.

Marriage License Fee in Oak Lawn

A marriage license costs $60 in Cook County. This is the same at every office. You pay when you apply. Cash, checks, and credit cards are all accepted. Some branches add a small surcharge for credit card use, so bring cash if you want to stay at exactly $60. The license prints on site and you take it home that day.

Under 750 ILCS 5/207, the license takes effect the next calendar day. If you apply on Monday, your earliest ceremony date is Tuesday. The license stays good for 60 days. After 60 days it expires. You would then have to start over and pay the $60 again. Certified copies of the completed marriage certificate have a separate fee. Contact the Cook County Clerk at (312) 603-0996 for copy pricing.

Oak Lawn Wedding Officiants

Under 750 ILCS 5/209, judges, retired judges, and religious leaders can perform marriages in Illinois. Cook County has something extra though. Because its population exceeds 2,000,000, the county clerk can also solemnize marriages. No other county in Illinois has this ability. You can get your license and have the ceremony done at the same clerk visit if you want to keep things quick and simple.

The officiant must complete the marriage certificate and return it to the Cook County Clerk within 10 days of the ceremony. Late returns create problems with getting certified copies later. Illinois does not require witnesses at the ceremony. That is one less thing to worry about for a small Oak Lawn wedding.

Marriage equality has been in effect in Cook County since February 21, 2014. The rest of Illinois followed on June 1, 2014. The rules are the same for everyone now. Same forms. Same fee. Same process at every office.

Oak Lawn Marriage License Copies

After the officiant files the completed certificate, the Cook County Clerk records it. You can then order certified copies. Go to the Bridgeview branch or any other Cook County Clerk location. Certified copies are the legal proof of your marriage that you will need for name changes, insurance updates, bank account changes, and other official business.

The IDPH marriage records page notes that the state does not issue certified copies. IDPH only verifies basic marriage facts from 1962 onward for a $5 fee. For the full certified copy of an Oak Lawn marriage license, the Cook County Clerk is the only source. The Vital Records Act (410 ILCS 535) governs storage and access rules. Marriage records in Illinois are not public under FOIA.
